Kagiso to host provincial Heritage Day festival: Thousands expected

Over 3 000 people will gather in Kagiso for Gauteng’s Heritage Day celebrations, blending cultural performances with the launch of the Provincial Indigenous Games.

Kagiso residents will be at the heart of this year’s provincial Heritage Day celebrations, which take place on Wednesday, September 24, at the Kagiso Sports Complex.

The township, which is 125 years old, will welcome thousands of visitors for a day of music, dance, and cultural performances. Groups representing Batswana, Basotho, amaZulu, amaXhosa, vhaVhenda, Indians, and others will showcase their heritage through poetry, music, and dance.

According to the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation spokesperson, Tumelo Taunyane, more than 3 000 people from across the province are expected to gather alongside the Gauteng Premier, the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, and mayors from the West Rand District Municipalities.

“This year’s event will be held under the theme ‘Reimagine Our Heritage Institutions for a New Era’. The theme emphasises the importance of using heritage as a foundation for building a dynamic, socially responsive, technologically innovative, and economically inclusive future,” said Taunyane.

The celebration also marks the start of the Provincial Indigenous Games, running from September 24 to 26 at the Randburg Sports Complex. More than 500 athletes will compete in nine traditional games, including diketo, kgati, drie-stokkies, morabaraba, and dibeke. These games aim to preserve and promote the cultural practices of previous generations, while highlighting their role in building cohesive communities.

Gauteng is home to over 110 museums and five of South Africa’s 11 Unesco World Heritage Sites, including the nearby Cradle of Humankind.
