Bergmann claims 7th title at Tzaneen Tennis Club champs

Reenen Bergmann secured his seventh straight men’s singles title as the Tzaneen Tennis Club championships thrilled crowds with top talent.

TZANEEN – The Tzaneen Tennis Club hosted its annual club championships finals on Sunday, September 7, drawing a lively crowd of around 50 members and supporters who enjoyed thrilling tennis followed by a festive braai.

This year’s tournament saw one of the biggest turnouts in recent years, with 24 entries in the men’s singles, including eight promising juniors, and 17 pairs competing in the doubles event.

The highlight of the day was the men’s singles final, where Reenen Bergmann reaffirmed his dominance by securing his seventh consecutive title.

Bergmann defeated Marais Botha in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, after a competitive clash that showcased Botha’s determination but ultimately underscored Bergmann’s experience and consistency.

In the men’s doubles, the father-and-son duo of JP Botha (Sr) and Marais Botha triumphed over James Excell and Abré Cilliers in a well-fought final. The Bothas sealed victory with a 6-2, 6-4 win, adding a family touch of glory to this year’s championships.

The event was not only about seasoned champions. A group of enthusiastic juniors, including Adriaan Genis, Eddie Mostert, JP Botha (Jr), Luan Lubbe, Ryan Schlebusch, Willem Mostert, Zander Knoetze, and the club’s only female entrant, Zoë Venter, brought energy and excitement to the courts.

Tzaneen Tennis Club has hosted its club championships since 1950 and still awards the original trophies, a proud tradition that binds past and present members.

Chairman Abré Cilliers praised the event, saying the mix of competitive spirit, family involvement, and community support created a memorable day:

“It was a fantastic showcase of tennis talent, and the atmosphere showed why our club has been going strong for decades. With so many juniors coming through, the future of tennis in Tzaneen is looking very bright.”
