LYDENBURG – Ama Wheelies, a non-profit-organisation empowering the rural disabled community of Mpumalanga from Mashishing, invites the public to join their Ama Wheelies brisk walk and fund-raiser on September 7.
The slogan for the day will be “Wear safety belts – Ama Wheelies don’t want new members”.
“We hope to be vocal and draw attention as we walk and hope to convey our message to motorists and all onlookers. The walk will serve as part of our awareness programme and as a fund-raiser.
Ama Wheelies is doing an awareness campaign telling people to wear safety belts as most of our members are in wheelchairs as a result of car accidents, and many of these injuries could have been avoided if safety belts were worn,” read a press statement.
The fun walk will start at 9:00 outside the library in Viljoen Street and will proceed down Kerk Street to De Clerq Street from where it will turn left in Voortrekker Street up to Viljoen Street, ending at the library.
They then plan to hand a petition to the executive mayor, Mr Michael Ncongwane in the hope that he will instruct the chief of traffic to ensure all motorists wear safety belts.
“Ama Wheelies provides specialised accommodation to disabled persons who are unable to help themselves. We do rehabilitation and combine training of both quadriplegics and family enabling quadriplegics to live independently.
Communications training comprises specialized sticky-keys. We create special job opportunities and facilitate wheelchair sports. Our quadriplegic home is the first of its kind in the entire province and our home-based outreach provides much-needed help in the province,” read the statement.
Ama Wheelies asks everyone to make Ama Wheelies their charity of choice. “Please support our fund-raiser and show your support by donating.
Not only is our cause worthy but in addition we are situated in rural Mpumalanga, serving disadvantaged, poor and disabled individuals enabling any donor to qualify for BEE and tax rebate.”
