Bafana 2-0 Elephants: five things you didn’t know about these teams
Bafana Bafana comprehensively beat Côte d’Ivoire at Mbombela Stadium last night. Not bad for a team ranked 51 on FIFA's official list as opposed to the visitors' position of 24. Read more on how the teams stack up.
1) They have met a total of six times. Four matches ended in draws with Bafana emerging victorious on two occasions – including last night.
2) Each team has won the Africa Cup of Nations tournament once before – Côte d’Ivoire in 1992 and South Africa in 1996.
3) Both have qualified for the tournament, to be held in Equatorial-Guinea next year.
4) The Elephants won only one of their three group stage matches during the World Cup this year. Bafana of course did not play.
5) Sunday marked the first time the home team has won the Nelson Mandela Challenge since beating Norway 2-1 in 2009.
