Construction to cause delays on the N4 this weekend

Travellers should expect the N4 toll route to be busy this long weekend.

NELSPRUIT – Travellers should expect the N4 toll route to be busy this long weekend. According to Trans African Concessions (TRAC), which manages the road, they expect a high number of motorists to travel between Gauteng, Mpumalanga, Swaziland and Mozambique between yesterday and Sunday.

“Plan your trip this weekend,” advised Ms Barbara Mommen, CEO of the Maputo Corridor Logistics Initiative (MCLI). “TRACis currently busy with extensive upgrades along various sections of the N4 which may cause some delays.”

Expected peak times are Friday from 08:00-10h00 and Sunday 12:00-19:00. Rehabilitation work is underway on Schoemanskloof. Two 24-hour stop and go traffic control points are in place between Joubert & Sons and Montrose.

A temporary stop and go is also in place between Mooiplaats and Indabushe. Travellers are advised to add approximately 20 minutes to their trips.

The N4 between Nelspruit and Malalane is being upgraded. There is a stop and go between Karino near Mabalel Lodge past the Mara intersection to the Kanyamazane exit. Heavy traffic can be expected and at peak times delays of 40 minutes and more can be experienced.

Another traffic control point is in place just after the Komatipoort Load Control Centre. Delays of 20 minutes can be expected.

Those traveling to the Kruger National Park should allow for possible delays and longer traveling times between Nelspruit and Malalane. “To avoid the Komatipoort stop and go en route to the Crocodile Bridge gate, take the Tenbosch turn-off from the N4 and travel via the Ngwenya Lodge road to Crocodile Bridge or the Komatipoort CBD,” Mommen recommended.

Border posts to Swaziland opened at 07:00. Mananga closes at 18:00, Jeppes Reef at 20:00 and Oshoek at 22:00. Travellers to and from Mozambique can pass through Lebombo 06:00-00:00 and Lomahasha 07:00-20:00.

“Please adhere to the speed restrictions in all construction areas,” Mommen said. “Strict law enforcement can be expected along the route.”

Motorists were also warned that the Higveld region stretching from Donkerhoek to Waterval Boven and sections of Schoemanskloof is prone to heavy mist early in the morning and late at night. For regular traffic updates, follow TRAC on Twitter at @TRACN4route.
