Clamp down on drunken drivers

More than 6 000 traffic fines were issued in September.

NELSPRUIT – Provincial traffic officers are clamping down on drivers with 14 arrests in the past week. The violations included drunken, reckless and negligent driving, and overloading.

According to the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, the operation succeeded by issuing

6 654 fines to motorists and discontinuing 252 vehicles that are not roadworthy. During the operation, 307 were impounded. The department’s MEC Vusi Shongwe said that the removal of these vehicles is critical to eliminate accidents and he calls on vehicle owners, including taxi and bus operators, to ensure that they adhere to the rules and regulations of the road. He urged law enforcement agencies to not have mercy on unfit drivers and unroadworthy vehicles in order to save lives.”

Statistics collated by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) in January this year indicated that car accidents are expected to continue being the second-leading cause of unnatural death in South Africa and the leading cause in Mpumalanga.
