The Da Vinci X surgical robot will assist in complex surgeries.
Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital, located in Mbombela, is always on a mission for better healthcare technology.
The facility recently launched its first Da Vinci X surgical robot and currently houses the only Rosa Robotic knee and hip surgical assistant in Mpumalanga.
The Da Vinci surgical robot will be used for urological, colorectal, gastrointestinal and gynaecological procedures.
The Da Vinci enables the surgeon to perform minimally invasive surgeries. With the help of robotic arms, it provides greater reach and a wider range of motion to enable the surgeon to perform quicker and more accurate surgery.
The Da Vinci was officially launched on May 29 and prominent members of the medical profession, executive members of the Department of Health, foreign insurance providers, local media, and representatives of Busamed Private Hospital Group, Medhold and EASE Global were in attendance.

This new robot has many advantages for patients by necessitating smaller incisions and reducing tissue manipulation, which leads to less post-operative pain and discomfort. Patients have a shorter hospital stay, recovery period and a decreased risk of complications, and can return to normal activities faster than after traditional surgery. The use of high-definition 3D cameras makes it easier for surgeons to get better close-up views of areas that would otherwise be harder to see in an open surgery.
The precision of robotic surgical technology means that patients can also expect a decreased chance of requiring in-hospital transfusions, reduced blood loss, a lower risk of surgical-site infections, as well as a reduced chance of having to be readmitted due to complications.
The Busamed team are grateful to our partners, Medhold and EASE Global, which were involved in bringing the Da Vinci to Mpumalanga. Busamed Board Director and founder of the then Lowveld Private Hospital, Dr Attie van Wyk, embraced the addition of the Da Vinci and its technology to better serve the community.

Further acknowledgement goes to Urologist Dr Jacques Henning, who six years ago had the ambition to train in robotics with the dream of bringing this technology closer to home.
Dr Henning completed his robotic surgery training in 2019 at the Pretoria Urology Hospital and the Orsi Academy in Belgium. Since then, he has been performing robotic urological surgeries at the Pretoria Urological Hospital. Now, with the first Da Vinci surgical robot based at Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital, these procedures can be performed right here in Mbombela.
Busamed Lowveld Private Hospital has a few other ongoing projects, which include the opening of a 24-hour Emergency Unit, with the addition of an ICU, High Care Unit and surgical patient accommodation. Two more theatres will be added, which will be dedicated robotic theatres. The expansion of the hospital is already in progress with groundwork currently under way.
The Busamed Hospital group has a national footprint with hospitals in KZN, the Free State, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape.
