“Being the vice-captain of the Noordwyk Secondary School netball team has taught me to deal with different personalities.”
These are the words of Zazi Kalako (16), a Grade 11 learner at the Noordwyk Secondary School in Klipfontein View.

“I am a Christian, most importantly, and a netball player. I would not say I am much different when I am at school or at home. I am [a] sports lover, and when I am not at school, I spend most of my time at the gym, or watching sporting events on various social media platforms, or just on the netball court, doing ball work with my friends,” said Zazi.
She said, as the vice-captain, she enjoys being with her teammates, and believes they are a happy family now. She believes the position has taught her to care for her teammates and be able to deal with different personalities and opinions.
“As a leader, I have also learnt how to communicate with my peers and understand their personalities. In return, my teammates have also learnt more about me and how we address certain issues within the team. We welcome constructive criticism to help improve each other’s game,” she added.

Even outside netball, Zazi says she is able to interact and blend with different people.
She says she enjoys a lot of singing, and partaking in TikTok dance challenges with her friends.
“I fell in love with netball in Grade 3, when my primary teacher asked if the class would be interested in playing netball. I remember when me and this other player were playing in the same position. The coach said we should run from pole to pole in the battle for the centre position and I outran her. I got the nod for this position and until today I still play it,” said Zazi.
Zazi concluded that she would like to play for the Spar Proteas and pursue a law qualification at the University of South Africa (Unisa).
