IDAC head Matthews Sesoko kidnapped and assaulted near Rabie Ridge

Head of investigations and operations at IDAC Matthews Sesoko was kidnapped on November 7 in Rabie Ridge, taking his cellphone and laptop.

The fight against corruption took a dangerous turn last week when Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) member Matthews Sesoko was kidnapped and robbed near Rabie Ridge.

The incident comes amid high-profile investigations and recent parliamentary testimonies, raising serious concerns about the safety of officials tackling crime at the highest levels.

Sesoko, the head of investigations and operations at IDAC, was kidnapped on the evening of November 7, and his cellphone and laptop were taken.

IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame said the attackers assaulted Sesoko and abandoned him near Rabie Ridge on the morning of November 8.

“While the NPA is wary of making any speculation on the motive behind such horrific action and whether it is related to his work, the incident and its timing reflect the possible dangers in this space,” said Mamothame. “The incident has been reported to the police for criminal investigation.”

Sesoko was part of the investigation that led to the arrest of Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, in June.

His kidnapping comes in the wake of IDAC head Andrea Johnson’s testimony before Parliament’s Ad Hoc Committee last week.

The committee is investigating claims made by KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.

Johnson revealed that since the arrest of Khumalo, who faces fraud and corruption charges alongside other senior police officials, she and her team have been subjected to intimidation.

“I received a message directly to my cellphone warning me to get the body bags ready. It said we had gone too far,” Johnson told parliament.
