Attacq and Waterfall City present a historic collaboration honouring globally renowned South African artist Dr Esther Mahlangu

The project blends cultural heritage with modern corporate identity, featuring vibrant Ndebele patterns created by Dr Mahlangu’s students alongside artists from the Mmabane Foundation.

Waterfall City, home to the iconic Mall of Africa, was enlivened this September by stunning art installations that celebrate the diversity of colour and culture.

In collaboration with Attacq, this project honours internationally acclaimed Ndebele artist Dr Esther Mahlangu, who bridges traditional Ndebele art with contemporary expressions.

Displaying these artworks on a public platform reflects a progressive approach to art while acknowledging Mahlangu’s significant contributions.

The official unveiling of the Mall of Africa staircase art took place on September 27 at the Crystal Court with a ribbon cutting ceremony, providing an immersive visual experience that coincides with Heritage Month and World Tourism Day.

The project uniquely blends cultural heritage with modern corporate identity, featuring vibrant Ndebele patterns created by Mahlangu’s students alongside artists from the Mmabane Foundation. This installation pays homage to her distinctive style within the urban fabric of Waterfall City.

At its core, the initiative highlights the students who designed and painted distinct Ndebele patterns, combined with Waterfall City’s branding, which adorned prominent staircases as a heartfelt tribute to Mahlangu.

Jackie van Niekerk, CEO of Attacq, emphasised the project’s significance, stating, “this initiative is a living tribute to collaboration, innovation, and cultural preservation.” She noted the beautiful fusion of tradition and modernity, reinforcing the celebration of Waterfall City’s roots and shared vision.
