Boxing continues to flourish in the community, thanks to the recent successful tournament of the Rabie Ridge Boxing Club, also known as Beyond Limits Sporting Academy.

The tournament, held on April 26 at the Rabie Ridge Community Hall, highlighted the academy’s growth and dedication to developing local talent.

Organised in partnership with the Ekurhuleni Boxing Association, the tournament included 12 bouts, and every participant received a participation medal to encourage involvement.

Standout boxers from Rabie Ridge included Kate Ugat, who earned a trophy for Best Boxer in the school-age division, and Brandon ‘Butcher’ Ncube, who was recognised as the best in his division, the Elite category. Ncube, who is considering turning professional by early 2026, demonstrated significant potential during the tournament.

Leroy Mosito, the club’s coach, emphasised that the primary goal of the event was to motivate local youth to join the club and garner community support for existing members.

While Mosito deemed the tournament a success, he acknowledged that most participants were visitors, and community support from Rabie Ridge was not as strong as they had hoped.
“But those who attended enjoyed themselves and are likely to support us again at future events. The quality of boxing in Ekurhuleni is improving, as is the standard of our club.”

2024 National Champion Kate Ugat and Brandon ‘Butchter’ Ncube, who wants to turn pro shortly.

Mosito also shared that the club continued to grow. This year, one new boxer had been graded, with about four more showing potential for grading later in the year. Grading involves evaluating boxers’ performance, experience, and skill levels to ensure fair and competitive matches within their weight classes. He stressed the importance of increased youth involvement in boxing, noting that some boxers still missed opportunities to compete in tournaments.

Brandon ‘Butcher’ Ncube is recognised as the best in his division, the Elite category.

“Things have become easier compared to when we first started the club. Initially, many boxers had never participated in tournaments or understood what it takes to compete. Now, they can explain to newcomers and even demonstrate what is needed. It is not an easy sport –discipline, consistency, and training are essential. The new boxers are motivated and have great potential to succeed if they remain dedicated.”

Mosito thanked Oom Victor, a local supermarket owner who made a donation leading up to the tournament, as well as those who participated in the success of the tournament.
