Toyota Starlet can run on fumes – 2021 Motoring Newsmaker No 8

Jaco Van Der Merwe

Our economy run in the hatchback returned excellent fuel consumption figures of 4.1 litres per 100km.

The Toyota Starlet is just the right medicine against the rising fuel price.

Two-thousand-and-twenty-one was an interesting year for the South African motoring landscape.

Some things changed, like an acceleration towards greener cars, while others stayed the same like Toyota topping the monthly sales charts.

In this series of 2021 Motoring Newsmakers, The Citizen looks back at the top 20 most popular online stories of the year. The series is dominated by South Africa’s most popular body style, bakkies, while the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 was by far the most viewed single model on our website. Other local favourites in the form of hot hatches, fuel efficient hatchbacks, big, mean SUVs, compact SUVs, Mercedes-AMGs and BMW M cars also drew their fair share of attention.

The Toyota Starlet was introduced to the local market just over a year ago. Essentially being a rebadged Suzuki Baleno, the South African motoring public’s long-standing faith in the Toyota badge showed as the Starlet sold like hot cakes pretty much from day one.

We took the Toyota Starlet on a little economy run and the results were remarkable. With the Starlet line-up starting at a very affordable price of R220 800, it is just the right medicine against the petrol price that hit record highs in December 2021.
