Covid-19: Active cases in South Africa reach just over 50 000

Recoveries now stand at a total of 612 763 translating to a recovery rate of 90%

The number of active Covid-19 cases in South Africa reached just over 50 000 on 3 October, according to the Minister of Health Dr Zweli Mkhize.

As of 3 October, the cumulative total of Covid-19 cases in South Africa was 679 716 with 50 015 active cases.

Gauteng remains the province with the highest number of active cases sitting at 19 496 followed by the Free State with 13 391.

Gauteng is also the province the highest cumulative number of cases since the start of the pandemic sitting at 220 696 (32.5 per cent) followed by KwaZulu-Natal with 119 489 (17.6 per cent) and Western Cape with 111 253 (16.4 per cent).

Recoveries now stand at a total of 612 763 translating to a recovery rate of 90 per cent.

A further 29 Covid-19 related deaths were recorded on 3 October with 11 from KwaZulu-Natal, eight from the Free State, seven from the Western Cape, two from Gauteng and one from the Eastern Cape. This brings the total number of Covid-19 deaths to 16 938.

A further 21 804 new tests were reported on 3 October, bringing the total number of tests conducted to date to 4 251 513.
