11 Children injured in crash

Twelve people, including 11 children, were injured in a collision on Heidelberg Road in the Alberton area, on Gauteng’s East Rand, this morning.

A Toyota Condor carrying 11 children, travelling in the direction of Leondale, allegedly collided with an articulated truck on Heidelberg Road, Germiston City Times reported.

Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson William Ntladi said all the children have been transported to hospital with various injuries.

“Five children have critical injuries, five are in a serious but stable condition, and one suffered minor injuries,” he said.

Ntladi added the driver of the Toyota suffered only minor injuries.

Last week, 22 schoolchildren were injured after the taxi they were travelling in collided with a bus on the Mangosuthu Highway, in Umlazi, KwaZulu-Natal.

Five children allegedly sustained serious injuries, while 17 others sustained minor injuries.

The children were allegedly all aged below 13.

According to paramedics, jaws of life had to be used to extricate the critically injured driver of the minibus, who was trapped in the wreckage.

The driver, along with the injured children, was taken to Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.
