Suspects sought for robbery

Police have launched a manhunt after an unconfirmed number of armed robbers forced their way through the front door of eShowe supermarket in KwaZulu-Natal.

It was alleged on Sunday morning that while the supermarket was preparing to open for business, a gang of about eight robbers forcefully entered through the front door as the security guard was allowing employees into the store, Zululand Observer reported.

It is believed the number of robbers could be as many as 15 people, including a few getaway drivers.

The robbers made off with an undisclosed amount of cash.

It is not clear how much of the money was pension money, which was to be paid out that morning.

One vehicle was left in the vicinity of the Natural Arch Drive. A second vehicle was found next to the road near Mpushini Park, police said.

All the suspects escaped, and no one was injured.

Investigations are ongoing.

In a separate incident, 10 suspects were arrested after a robbery and shoot-out at a supermarket in Dundee, KwaZulu-Natal, in October last year.

A group of about 20 armed men – one of whom had an AK47 – allegedly entered a local supermarket and took an undisclosed amount of cash before opening fire on police.

Major Thulani Zwane said two robbers, four bystanders and two officers were wounded in the resulting shoot-out.

Five unlicensed firearms were later recovered by police, while three vehicles used by the gang were impounded, added Zwane.
