No peace for shooting victim

No arrests have been made since a shooting incident that left four people injured at the Deep in the Woods festival in Alberton, on Gauteng’s East Rand.

The organisers of the festival have already started preparation for the next festival, according to a post on their Facebook page, posted on January 19.

In October last year, two party-goers at the music festival were seriously injured after they were caught in the crossfire of an alleged gang-related shoot-out, Alberton Record reported.

Police said three cases of attempted murder were opened against the shooter, who himself was in a serious condition in hospital following the incident.

One of the victims, Ariella Cameron, claimed to have yet to give her statement to police.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini reportedly said: “In most cases [a statement] must be taken as soon as possible whilst the incident is still fresh in the memory of a witness.”

Cameron continues to recover from a gunshot to the shoulder.

Her mother Jenni said: “It’s like it never happened, which is rather upsetting to us. Everyone is just caring on with their day-to-day lives”.

Professional South African boxer Jarred Selwyn Silverman-Lebotschy was also shot and seriously wounded during the incident.

According to boxing reference site boxrec.com, Silverman is ranked sixth in the country in the light-welterweight division, with a record of seven wins and three losses.

His last fight, according to the site, was against Andile Mtungwa at the Durban International Convention Centre, a fight Silverman won by a technical knockout.

Dlamini said “several” bystanders were also injured during the shooting.
