Suspects wanted after Sandton shooting
Two suspects remain at large after a shooting incident in Sandton, in the north of Johannesburg, yesterday.
Police said the suspects are believed to have been involved in a house robbery in Bryanston,Sandton Chronicle reported.
This was followed by one of the suspects and two members of the public sustaining injuries in an attempted hijacking and accident on the corner of Summit Road and Kelvin Drive yesterday afternoon.
Sandton police spokesperson Captain Kym Cloete said at about 2.45pm, detectives were busy with undercover patrols when they spotted a suspicious white Ford Ranger in Bryanston.
She said when police turned around, the suspects immediately accelerated and fled. Police then pursued the suspects, who then fired shots at them. Police returned fire.
“At the corner of Kelvin Drive and Summit Road, the suspects had an accident and jumped out of their vehicle,” said Cloete.
She said two suspects hijacked a Toyota Avanza and fled the scene, while the other two were arrested by police.
Cloete added the suspects assaulted a motorist while attempting to hijack the vehicle, and a second person was injured in the car accident with the suspects.
“Two members of the public’s vehicles and one police vehicle were damaged,” said Cloete.
Police later confirmed the suspects’ Ford Ranger was a stolen vehicle.
Last week, a gun fight between police and hijacking suspects led to the shooting of a 19-year-old suspect in Shallcross, Durban.
It was alleged the complainant parked his vehicle outside his home when he was approached by two armed men.
The suspects threatened the complainant with firearms, and they snatched his cellphones and an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing with his vehicle.
