Girl (5) dies after eating a banana
Police have opened an inquest docket after the death of a five-year-old girl who died in Ivory Park, Tembisa, allegedly after eating a banana.
“On Tuesday afternoon I went to fetch her. I found her playing with my brother’s child, and she seemed fine. I brought her a banana, which was cut into two pieces by my uncle’s wife,” Leso said.
The children then ate the banana and continued playing.
However, Leso’s daughter started complaining her throat was burning and later started vomiting.
The child was then rushed to paramedics, but she was later declared dead.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said the cause of death was still unknown and no arrests had yet been made.
“We are still waiting for the postmortem results, which will confirm the cause of death,” she said.
Sekgobela added parents should be careful to not leave dangerous substances around their houses.
In December, four family members died after eating poisonous mushrooms in Olievenhoutbosch, north of Johannesburg.
The family allegedly ate a meal with mushrooms, which had been picked by the mother from a patch she passed on her way from work.
The four family members, including both parents and two children, reportedly died at different times while receiving intensive treatment at a local hospital.
