Prisoner commits suicide in court

A prisoner allegedly committed suicide inside a bathroom at the KwaDukuza Magistrates’ Court in KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday.

Police spokesperson Colonel Bheki Zondi said the prisoner was due to be transferred to Westville Prison when he asked to use the bathroom, North Coast Courier reported.

While in the toilet, the man then reportedly hanged himself with his shoelaces.

Belts, shoelaces and other accessories were not given to prisoners while in their cells, Zondi added. However, these items were returned to inmates during court appearances.

In a similar incident, a woman believed to be a prostitute allegedly hanged herself with her shoelaces at the Krugersdorp Magistrates’ Court in October last year.

At the time, police said the 24-year-old woman had been due to appear before the court on charges of loitering and possession of drugs.

The alleged suicide case was later handed over to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) for investigation.
