Mental assessments for Baby Jamie’s ‘killers’

Patricia Ishwaral and Salatchee Basanich, mother and grandmother of slain toddler Jamie Naidoo, both made a brief appearance at the Chatsworth Magistrates’ Court in Durban on Friday.

During the pair’s brief appearance, it was heard they would be sent to Fort Napier Hospital in Pietermaritzburg for mental observation, Rising Sun Chatsworth reported.

The two women were arrested in November last year and charged with the murder of three-year-old Baby Jamie, who died after months of alleged abuse.

They were being held at Westville Prison.

The child reportedly had cigarette burns all over her face and body, and her fingernails and toenails seemed to have been yanked out.

The girl’s ears were also allegedly torn and bleeding, while one of her knees had been dislocated.

In an earlier appearance, the court also heard the allegations that Baby Jamie had been raped.

Following Friday’s court appearance, members of the community were reportedly angered by how “well” the pair looked compared to their first appearance.

They claimed the women were being treated well in prison, as they had reportedly put on weight and treated to haircuts,

Ishwaral and Basanich are expected to appear again on March 19.
