Two arrested after truck hijacking
Two suspects involved in a well-orchestrated truck hijacking have been arrested by members of the Soweto Flying Squad in Toekomsrus, Randfontein, in Gauteng.
It was alleged the suspects targeted the truck at about 11am last Thursday when it stopped at an intersection in Brandvlei, Randfontein Herald reported.
The suspects allegedly forced the driver out before they sped off with the truck.
Soweto Flying Squad Warrant Officer T. Rametsi said the truck was then spotted at about midnight on the same day by members of the flying squad at the intersection of Impala Road and the N12.
“My partner and I signalled at the driver to pull over, and it seemed like he was complying, but once he stopped he jumped out of the truck and attempted to run away,” added Rametsi.
The suspect was eventually shot by the flying squad members, wounding him in his lower body, and then apprehended, said Rametsi
Officers questioned him about the firearm used in the truck hijacking, but the suspect notified them there were two other vehicles with suspects involved in the hijacking, added Rametsi.
The suspect also told police the firearm used was in the red VW Golf tailing the truck.
The Golf was stopped at Zuurbekom Road, next to Toekomsrus, but no firearm was found, police said.
The suspect in the Golf was also taken into custody. The white Polo with the remaining suspects got away, police added.
Police said they suspected the firearm was still in their possession.
In a separate incident, a suspect has been arrested after he was spotted driving a hijacked truck carrying computers worth R6 million on the R21 in Kempton Park last month.
Two other suspects were believed to be on the run in a silver Ford Figo,
The truck was hijacked in Heidelberg, and a tracking company notified the police and gave a description of the vehicle. It was first one spotted on Barbara Road by the flying squad, police said.
