Three arrested after Joburg hijacking

Three suspects, one of whom is a former Johannesburg Metro police officer, were arrested after the hijacking of a cigarette vehicle and a silver bakkie.

The attempted hijacking reportedly took place at a shopping centre in Katlehong, on Gauteng’s East Rand, on Monday, Comaro Chronicle reported.

Fidelity Security officers pursued the suspects to Rispark, in the south of Johannesburg, where the hijacked vehicle was abandoned.

A manhunt ensued, after which all three suspects were arrested.

In July last year, four Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) traffic officials were arrested in connection with a hijacking.

Police reportedly received a tip-off and approached two occupants in the alleged hijacked vehicle.

The two occupants then reportedly got out and ran into a patrol car, which sped off.

The four officials were arrested in Eldorado Park, in the south of Johannesburg, after a high-speed chase with police.

According to police, the suspects were charged with robbery, racketeering and theft.
