Elephant shot after trampling game ranger

An elephant cow has been shot and killed after it trampled on the head training ranger of Sabi Sabi Game Reserve in Mbombela, Mpumalanga, on Friday.

The game reserve’s managing director, Rod Wynham, said the unidentified ranger, 23, was out on an early morning walk with other trainee rangers when the incident occurred at about 9am,Lowvelder reported.

“They came across an elephant cow that charged at them. The head training ranger was very brave and did his utmost best to keep the animal away from the trainees. He was severely injured during the incident. Unfortunately, the elephant had to be shot and killed,” added Wynham.

He said the victim was airlifted to Mediclinic, where he is currently receiving treatment.

“The head training ranger is highly trained and experienced. I want to commend his bravery,” he added.

This after video footage emerged showing a leopard attacking a tour guide in the Kruger National Park, just outside Skukuza Camp, in Mpumalanga, earlier this month.

In the footage, a convoy of vehicles is seen on a road while the predator is seen attempting to climb into the vehicle.
