UPDATE: Runaway’s search for mother ends in tragedy
A young boy’s desperate search for his lost mother in the cold and wet streets of Richards Bay last week, has ended in tragedy.
Innocent Dlamini, 14, who was found roaming the streets by police last Sunday, was informed by social workers that his mother had passed away a few months ago, Zululand Observer reported.
When questioned by the police, he said he was looking for his mother Busi Dlamini, 42, who left their home in Piet Retief, Mpumalanga in December last year.
He said he had been struggling financially and was seeking assistance from his mother, whom he believed worked at a local fast food outlet.
While police undertook a search to ascertain the whereabouts of his mother, Innocent, after initially sleeping on the police station’s benches, was taken in by Mzingazi Community Policing Forum (CPF) Chairperson Sharon Mdletshe.
Following the news of his mother’s death on Thursday, Mdletshe and Captain Michelle Michaels from the Richards Bay police returned him to his hometown.
“The boy is originally from Pongola where he lived with his grandmother. Owing to his circumstances at home, the Department of Social Development decided temporarily place him in another home. There appears to have been some family conflict about who should take care of him,” said Mdletshe.
