While you might think that matric final exam results are the most important achievement in your schooling career and are crucial for your next step into tertiary education, it is in fact the upcoming term 2 results that already pave the way to your post-matric education.
Achieving consistent results throughout the year is critical and a vital indicator of future success in university admissions, scholarship or bursary programmes and financial aid opportunities. This makes the upcoming mid-year exams, or the prelims, at the end of term 2 a crucial first step to show your academic strengths and identify the areas where you require more work.
Educate yourself now on the minimum requirements of various tertiary education institutes to understand what your options are and what you need to work towards, to make achieve your academic goals:
- To qualify for Higher Certificate studies, you need a National Senior Certificate. A key requirement is achieving a minimum of 30% in the language of learning and teaching at the higher education institution, a standard certified by Umalusi, the Quality Assurance Council. Specific institutions and programmes may have additional requirements, including subject combinations and achievement levels.
- For entry into Diploma programmes, the baseline requirement is also a National Senior Certificate, with a minimum of 30% in the institution’s language of learning and teaching, as well as an achievement rating of 3 (Moderate Achievement, 40%-49%) or higher in four recognised 20-credit subjects. As with Higher Certificate programmes, institutions may stipulate further requirements, including specific NSC subjects and performance levels, to meet both institutional and programme-specific needs.
- To pursue a Bachelor’s Degree, students must hold a National Senior Certificate, achieving at least 30% in the language of learning and teaching as per the institution’s requirements, verified by Umalusi. Furthermore, an achievement rating of 4 (Adequate Achievement, 50%-59%) or higher in four recognised 20-credit subjects is necessary. Similar to other qualifications, universities may demand additional subject combinations and achievement standards to align with the specific requirements of their programs.
