Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside – waffles are perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dessert. International Waffle Day, celebrated on 25 March, is the perfect excuse to whip up a batch of these golden delights and get creative with toppings. Whether you love them sweet with syrup and berries or savoury with cheese and eggs, there’s a waffle for everyone! Making waffles from scratch is easier than you might think. All you need is a waffle maker and a handful of simple ingredients.
Ingredients
- 250g plain flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tbsp caster sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 300ml whole milk
- 100g unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
Method
- Preheat the waffle maker according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
- Gradually pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Be careful not to overmix – some lumps are fine.
- Lightly grease the waffle maker with butter or oil, then pour in just enough batter to cover the plates.
- Cook for 3-5 minutes, or until golden brown and crisp.
