India honours Madiba’s legacy with R2m donation to foundation
The Indian government said the donation was intended to support the foundation fulfil its objectives.
In the spirit of remembering and honouring Madiba, the Nelson Mandela Foundation has received a donation of R2 million from the government of India, reports The Citizen.
The donation, by India high commissioner Ruchi Ghanashyam, at the Indian consulate in Johannesburg on Tuesday was received by foundation CEO Sello Hatang.
“It’s not the physical being that creates legacies, but those who are left behind,” Hatang said.
“This honour comes at a time when the world is experiencing something Madiba never thought would happen.
“At a time that instead of building more bridges, we are advocating for high walls to keep those who are alienated out.
“And sadly, it comes at a time when we are alienating our young people.”
The donation was inspired by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to South Africa in July.
Ghanashyam informed the foundation in October that the money would be availed.
“This donation is intended to support the Nelson Mandela Foundation in fulfilling its noble objectives in the days to come,” Ghanashyam said.
“As we commemorate the third anniversary of the passing away of Madiba, this donation is in recognition of the important role the foundation plays in preserving the legacy of the great leader, Nelson Mandela.
“India has always stood by South Africans in their struggle for equality and justice.
“India has been associated as a proud partner with the foundation since its inception.”
