Man tries to rob furniture shop, hides in wardrobe

A series of humorous events lead to the arrest of a man who allegedly tried to rob a furniture store with a toy gun in and hid inside a wardrobe in Bethal, Mpumalanga.

The man allegedly tried to rob the cash office of the town’s Joshua Doore shop on Monday.

During the incident, the town’s main street was barricaded by police while members from Crime Intelligence, the Flying Squad, eMzinoni Police, the K9 Secunda Dog Unit and Crime Squad attended the scene, Ridge Times reported.

It is believed a staff member informed police that the suspect had taken one of the cashiers to the cash office. The cashier was released after she had handed over the keys to the safe.

“She was tied with tape and was released without injuries,” police spokesperson Constable Thomas Mogadime said.

The cashier gave the police a description of the suspect and informed them that he was armed and hiding in a wardrobe.

Security forces entered the building and conducted a search with police dogs and managed to apprehend the suspect, Mogadime said.

“He tied himself as though he was one of the victims. He had a bag of clothes and a toy gun in his possession,”

He was then arrested and taken into custody. No one was injured and nothing was stolen from the store.
