Murder and arson suspect dies in hospital

A 55-year-old man who last week set fire to the house in which his 37-year-old wife and two-year-old son burned to death at the Plain Farm compound in Letsitele, Limpopo, has died in hospital.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant-Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said the unidentified man died on Tuesday from the injuries he sustained during the fire, Letaba Herald reported.

Ngoepe added the man’s wife, Lucy Mabunda, and her son, Wisdom Nkuna, had died from the fire the man had started after a domestic dispute. He said the arson and murder cases the suspect was facing would be closed.

In a separate incident, a man was arrested for allegedly torching his house, where his sister also lived, in Kagiso, Gauteng, in March.

Police arrived at the house after receiving a complaint on Sunday night, Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya said. Initial information indicated the man had set the house alight after a disagreement with family members.

“The sister further led the police throughout the house showing them all the damaged property. While the police were inspecting the damages, the suspect confronted them to say he was the one who set the house on fire.”

The damage to the house was estimated at R10 000.
