One killed, another arrested after robbery

One suspect has been killed and another arrested after a business robbery in the Umlazi area in KwaZulu-Natal today.

It was alleged two Ethiopian nationals were sleeping in their tuck shop in F Section at about 1.45am when the suspects broke into the shop and robbed them, police said.

During the process, Umlazi police were reportedly contacted, and they reacted to the business robbery in progress.

Two suspects inside the shop allegedly opened fire at the police and police retaliated, fatally wounding one suspect.

Police added the second suspect was captured and was found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with six live rounds of ammunition.

Goods taken during the robbery were recovered, and the recovered firearm will be sent for ballistics tests to establish if it had been used in any other crimes in the province.

Cases of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition were opened at Umlazi Police Station for investigation.

The arrested suspect (19) will appear in the Umlazi Magistrates` Court soon to face charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The KwaZulu-Natal provincial commissioner, Lieutenant-General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, commended the Umlazi police for their quick response, the arrest and recovery of goods.

In a separate incident, two suspected looters were shot and killed in Langlaagte, south of Johannesburg, last month.

The pair was allegedly part of a group that went to a Somalian-owned shop with the intention of looting it, police said.
