Police officers turn guns on families

Two KwaZulu-Natal police officers appeared in different courts this week after two shooting incidents in the province.

On Tuesday evening, a 35-year-old off-duty officer was arrested after allegedly shooting his wife, Ladysmith Gazette reported.

Police arrived at scene in the Woodford area near Bergville and found the woman with a gunshot wound to the stomach.

She was later rushed to a nearby hospital with critical injuries and is said to be currently fighting for her life.

The officer was expected to appear in the Bergville Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday to face charges of attempted murder.

On Monday, another off-duty officer appeared in the Ladysmith Magistrates’ Court on the same charges.

In this instance, the 33-year-old police officer reportedly shot two of his relatives in the St. Chad’s area of Ladysmith on Friday night.

The victims reportedly suffered gunshot wounds to the cheek and leg.

The officer was granted bail after his court appearance.

In another incident, a police officer allegedly shot and killed his wife – also an officer – in a murder-suicide at their home in Uitenhage, Eastern Cape last year.

Neighbours reportedly alerted officials when they heard gunshots from the house.

Police investigations were launched shortly after the incident.
