Policewoman shoots self at Durban hospital

An inquest docket has been opened after a police officer shot and killed herself at a hospital in Amanzimtoti, near Durban, this morning.

“We can confirm an incident took place this morning at Kingsway Hospital, where a 34-year-old constable shot and killed herself. The motive is unknown,” provincial police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said.

Annatjie Demetriou, general manager of Netcare Kingsway Hospital, confirmed that a woman, who was a visitor, died at the hospital following a self-inflicted injury, South Coast Sun reported.

The incident occurred at about 5am and most patients and visitors to the hospital were not exposed to the tragedy.Counsellors were immediately made available to offer support to the woman’s family, and counselling is also being offered to patients and staff members.

“On behalf of the staff and management of the hospital, we wish to convey our sincere condolences to the woman’s family and her loved ones. We are not in a position to disclose any further information,” added Demetriou.

The hospital is cooperating with the police in their investigation.
