Principal’s car petrol bombed at Roodepoort school

A case of malicious damage to property on the West Rand has been opened after community members reportedly petrol bombed a vehicle belonging to the Roodepoort Primary School principal.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Nonhlanhla Khumalo said at about 12.50pm yesterday, an unknown person hurled a petrol bomb at the school premises and in the process set the principal’s motor vehicle on fire.

This comes after a prolonged dispute between members of the community and the school. The group demands that the principal, who is black, be removed from her post and a coloured principal be appointed.

“No injuries have been reported, and no arrests have been made. Police are investigating the damaged caused following the incident,” said Khumalo.

Department of education spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane confirmed the incident, saying the department was are aware there were racial tensions at the school but could not at this stage link this attack with the principal post.

“The matter was solved long ago after the Independent Investigation Firm appointed by the MEC revealed their findings and recommendations. The situation has since been under control. The district office and the police have been monitoring the school,” added Sekhonyane.

She said the matter was now in the hands of the police investigating while the outcome was pending.

In June, community members and parents of pupils at the school were up in arms as they alleged black teachers who were teaching their children Afrikaans were not competent.

The parents took to the school protesting against the black principal’s alleged plan to “hire more black teachers and not renewing the contracts of eight coloured teachers”.
