Soweto taxi boss gunned down in KZN

A 55-year-old taxi boss from Soweto has been gunned down in Empangeni, KwaZulu-Natal.

According to police, the bullet-riddled body of Dumisani Mthetwa was found at an Engen garage in the central business district just before 6pm on Monday night, Zululand Observer reported.

He was declared dead on the scene.

Empangeni police spokesperson Captain Mbongeni Mdlalose could not confirm whether or not police were treating the killing as a hit, but he confirmed a case of murder had been opened. It is believed Mthetwa owned a number of taxis in Soweto, but the motive of the killing is unknown. No firearms were found on his person.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker added no arrests have yet been made.

Last week, a woman believed to be an employee of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) was shot dead after a taxi feud turned violent in Tembisa, Ekurhuleni.

The woman was shot after a group of people allegedly arrived at the rank in a minibus and opened fire at another minibus that was loading passengers. Three other passengers sustained injuries.
