Student allegedly killed by ‘lover’
A 30-year-old man allegedly strangled his roommate before taking his own life by setting himself alight in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
He was allegedly strangled to death by his roommate, Suhayl Rambaran.
There were signs of a struggle in the bedroom, while a belt thought to have been used in the alleged murder was also found on the bed next to Sunder’s body.
It is believed the two were in a secret relationship.
Police added Rambaran had written a suicide letter on behalf of the two men, apologising and stating they were happy now.
Rambaran, who was divorced and unemployed, reportedly drove Sunder’s vehicle to a nearby dirt road before dousing himself in diesel and setting himself alight.
He was found by a relative, who then drove him to hospital. However, Rambaran reportedly died on the way there.
In April, a Mamelodi taxi driver was sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment after injuring his wife and killing her lover when he burned down the room in which they were conducting an affair.
The wife was said to have sneaked out of the house to be with her secret lover when she woke up in the early hours of the morning and smelled petrol before she noticed flames.
Her lover broke two windows, and they managed to escape, but she suffered burns and cuts to her face and legs, while her lover died in hospital a few days later.
