Three arrested for murder of school patroller in Sekampaneng

"The motive for the killing was unknown as nothing was taken from him and nothing was stolen from the school premises."

The family of a slain school patroller, who was hacked to death, have expressed their gratitude to Temba police for the arrest of three men believed to be behind his death.

Willy Matjeng (45) was killed on 19 November 2019.

The men, aged 22, 26 and 37, were arrested on Monday and charged with his murder.

Sergeant Herman Moremi said Matjeng was employed as a security patroller at Adam Masebe High School in Sekampaneng when he was attacked and hacked to death with a sharp object during the night.

“The motive for the killing was unknown as nothing was taken from him and nothing was stolen from the school premises.

“The investigating officer compiled all evidence and managed to trace the suspects to their homes around Sekampaneng. They will appear at the Moretele magistrate’s court in due course.”

The wife of the deceased, Joyce Matjeng, said she was relieved someone has been arrested for the murder of her husband.

“I have been crying since the day he was killed. I was even scared of going outside, I hired people to install a gate at my home because I did not know who killed him. I was always asking myself who could cause me so much pain.”

Joyce described her husband as a kind and loving man.

She said they have been married for 19 years.

“He loved the church and he would go to church every Sunday. We have never seen him angry in the house, I do not have a scar on my head because he never laid his hands on me. He loved his children, he was a very kind man.”

She said her children have not accepted their father’s death.

“There was a time when I found my daughter looking at his photo on her phone saying, ‘it’s time papa, let’s go to church’.”

Joyce said she wanted to thank the police for the arrests.

“I don’t even know how to thank them. I am so happy that someone is going to be held accountable for what happened to him. The police worked so hard.”

Temba station commander Brigadier Martha Mokobori applauded the police for their good work.

“We won’t tolerate this kind of behaviour and will make sure those who commit a crime will be removed from society,” she said.
