VIDEO: Caden Slabbert back at school
Caden Slabbert, the eight-year-old boy who survived a brick-throwing attack while travelling with his family on the N12 highway in April, is recovering at home and back at school.
After months of recovering in the Netcare Clinton Hospital and later in rehab, Caden was finally discharged from the Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital in Auckland Park, Johannesburg two weeks ago after a long and often hurdled road to recovery, Krugersdorp News reported.
He is currently going through homeschooling to help him in his recovery to a normal life again. However, Caden’s Grade 1 teacher at Monument Primary School in Krugersdorp voluntarily offered to give him revision classes once a week to prepare him for returning to school by next year.
“We are getting there. He is almost back on an eight-year-old’s level,” his mother Andriëtte Cooper said regarding the boy’s learning capacity.
Speaking from a classroom at the school, Caden thanked the community of Krugersdorp for their prayers and well wishes.

An evaluation by one of his psychologists suggests Caden will recover fully and fly through mainstream schooling. There is however a lot of revision work to be done and things that will need to be relearned, his mother said.
Meanwhile, Caden is still waiting to undergo surgery to replant the piece of his skull that was crushed when he was hit by a brick on his head. Caden’s family is planning a special homecoming party for him after the surgery and full recovery.
“It is so lovely having him back home. He quickly adapted back into the household and is already testing his boundaries and doing what all little boys like to do best, play rough,” Cooper said.
Although Caden did not at first know what happened to him, his mother explained the incident to which he reportedly replied: “If I can see that man, I would tell him to come to church with me.”
