VIDEO: Roof collapses at East Rand Mall

Management of the East Rand Mall in Boksburg have launched an investigation after a portion of the centre’s roof collapsed yesterday.

The incident apparently happened at about 11am. According to Petra Foord, general manager at the mall, a part of the new floating bulkhead dislodged during the current refurbishment, Boksburg Advertiser reported.

“No damages or injuries have been incurred or have been reported,” said Foord.

The mall is currently undergoing extensive redevelopment plans, which will enlarge the mall by a further 7 350 square metres.

“Structural engineers are currently on site to access the incident. The safety of our shoppers is of paramount importance to us,” Foord said.

This comes after a structural collapse occurred at the Nelson Mandela Square section of Sandton City, Johannesburg, last month.

Nelson Mandela Square management released a statement on behalf of JHI Properties, which manages the section of Sandton City where the incident occured.

JHI Properties CEO Nomzamo Radebe explained the ceiling within a common area collapsed during construction work inside an empty store on the upper level.

“No customers were injured during the incident. Two construction workers suffered minor injuries and received care on site,” Radebe said at the time.
