Warrant officer arrested for attempting to smuggle drugs into Polokwane correctional facility

The arrested officer was there to fetch inmates who were due to appear in court.

A 47-year-old warrant officer caught red-handed while attempting to smuggle dagga into Polokwane Correctional Centre was arrested on Tuesday morning (7 August), says the police, Polokwane Review reports.

According to a statement issued by spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, officials at the correctional facility said the arrested officer was there to fetch inmates who were due to appear in court, when he was caught attempting to smuggle dagga into the facility for an inmate.

“A correctional official on duty caught him red-handed and informed the police who arrested him. Two packages of dagga weighing 143.99g were confiscated from the member during his arrest,” says Mojapelo.

The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has condemned the conduct of this member in the strongest possible terms.

“Police members are always expected to remain true to their conscience and mandate, and refrain from engaging in criminal activities as the citizenry at large is looking up to them to be in the forefront when it comes to fighting crime,” said General Ledwaba.

The suspect, who is attached to Mankweng police station as a court orderly, will appear in Polokwane Magistrate’s Court  on Wednesday 8 August (today).
