Locally, the new-generation BMW X3 is available in three flavours, 20d, 30e and M50, all of which are equipped with the German marque’s eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-paw setup. The sole diesel model in the line-up, the 20d employs a 2l, four-cylinder oil-burner churning out 140kW and 400N.m of torque, the latter of which is available from a mere 1 500r/min. According to the company, the turbodiesel unit sips, on average, 5.8l/100km. The 20d has a claimed 0-100km/h sprint time and top speed of 7.7 seconds and 215km/h.

The first electrified X3 produced locally, the 30e is equipped with a petrol-electric powertrain comprising a 140 kW/310N.m 2l turbo-four and 135kW/250N.m electric motor, coupled with a 19.7kWh battery pack. Combined the plug-in hybrid configuration produces 220kW and 450N.m. When assisted by a fully charged battery, the petrol unit sips a claimed 1.1l/100km. On electric power alone, BMW says the 30e offers a driving range of up 90km. The 0-100km/h sprint time and top speed are rated at 6.2 seconds and 215km/h.

The current pinnacle X3 (before the full-fat M model is revealed), the M50, which, in effect, replaces the previous-generation M40i, is powered by a 3l inline-six, which has been tuned to produce 8kW and 80N.m more than the model it replaces. The M Performance X3 is now endowed with 293kW and 580N.m, which, BMW says, is good for a 4.6-second 0-10 km/h sprint time and an electronically governed top speed of 250km/h. The turbocharged six-pot has a claimed average fuel consumption of 7.7l/100 km.
