Alarming statistics have surfaced pertaining to police members without firearm competency certificates who have been let loose on the streets, Roodepoort Record reports.

According to Gauteng MEC for community safety, Sizakele Nkosi-Malobane’s response to a DA question in the Gauteng Legislature, 2 031 South African Police Service members without firearm compliance certificates are currently patrolling Gauteng’s streets.

Of the 2 031 active members without firearm compliance certificates, 627 are stationed in Tshwane. Ekurhuleni has 351, and Johannesburg has 196.

The worst affected stations are Evaton with 45 and Sebokeng with 49 uncertified members. This means these members are not supposed to be deployed outside the confines of the station, as the risks and liability are enormous.

Since April this year, 14 members without valid compliance certificates discharged their firearms.

When it comes to rank, 1 034 of these members hold the rank of captain within the police.
