“We got 40 medals competing against 71 countries, and we were no 7 in the medals table, and in the African continent we were No 1,” Mbalula said on Wednesday.

“The athletes did exceptionally well.”

Mbalula confirmed an open-bus parade would be held on Friday, starting at Olympic House in Oaklands at 11am and ending at Nelson Mandela Square, where a full programme of entertainment would start at around 5pm.

Aside from the team that raked in 40 medals at the Glasgow Games, the top-ranked Proteas Test cricket team and IBF super-flyweight champion Zolani Tete would also be recognised for their achievements.

“We invite everyone to come and welcome our athletes and share the celebrations with us.”
