The in-form road runner, using the Mandela Day Marathon in Pietermaritzburg on Sunday as a training run for the Cape Town Marathon on September 21, smashed the course record by 19 minutes as she crossed the line in 2:47:15.

She was nearly 10 minutes clear of Ethiopian Chelita Asefa, who finished second in 2:57:00.

Less than 24 hours earlier, Van Zyl had won the Spar Women’s Challenge 10km race in Centurion in 33:32, breaking Mapaseka Makhanya’s course record by five seconds.

Meanwhile, fellow South African Thobani Chagwe won the men’s race at the 42km Mandela Day Marathon in 2:27:12, improving the course record by more than a minute, with countryman Othaniel Phahlane taking second place in 2:28:39.
