The only South African rider in the opening UCI World Tour race of the season, turning out for Australian outfit Orica-GreenEdge, Impey formed part of a bunch sprint that narrowly failed to close down a four-man breakaway in the 133km opening stage from Tanunda to Campbelltown.

He was 13 seconds behind overall leader Jack Bobridge in the general classification, heading into the 151km second stage from Unley to Stirling.

Bobridge, one of the local favourites riding for UniSA-Australia, burst clear of the small breakaway group in the final kilometres to win the first of six legs in 2:59:31.
