Scheepers, the only South African in action on day four of the year’s first Grand Slam, and Kazakh partner Zarina Diyas defeated Croatia’s Darija Jurak and American Megan Moulton-Levy 4-6 6-4 7-6 in their opening match at Melbourne Park.

The duo set up a second-round clash against German pairing Julia Gorges and Anna-Lena Gronefeld, the No 16 seeds.

South Africa’s top-ranked player, Kevin Anderson, will be back in action on Friday.

Anderson, the No 14 seed, will meet former world No 7 Richard Gasquet of France in the third round of the men’s singles draw.
