South Africa’s top-ranked women’s player, who was knocked out in the opening round of the singles draw, and 21-year Kazakhstani partner Zarina Diyas went down 6-7 2-6 against German duo Julia Gorges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, the No 16 seeds, in the second round.

On Saturday, the country’s top-ranked men’s player, No 14 seed Kevin Anderson, will play perhaps the most important match of his career at Melbourne Park.

Anderson will meet world No 3 Rafael Nadal of Spain in the fourth round, with the match scheduled to be played at 5am (SA time).

It will be the sixth time Anderson will play in the fourth round of a Grand Slam, as he aims to reach the quarter-finals for the first time.
