The country’s top-ranked woman, Moolman-Pasio had retained both her crowns at the national championships in Mbombela last week, before leading the SA squad to victory in the team time trial at the continental showpiece on Monday. “You never really know where you stand on the course, especially as I didn’t have any time splits, but I just kept going as hard as I could,” she said in a statement released by Bigla Pro Cycling.
“I was really happy to come through the finish line with a decent win.” Compatriot Heidi Dalton took second place behind Moolman-Pasio, and Aurelie Halbwachs of Mauritius secured the bronze medal.
Meanwhile, Ethiopian Tsgabu Grmay became the first rider from the East African nation to win an elite medal at the continental championships. Grmay won the men’s time trial ahead of Eritrean Daniel Teklehaimanot, and Reinardt Janse van Rensburg was the third SA rider home, in third place.
