Former national champion Louis Meintjes was full of praise for his team-mates on Saturday after South Africa swept the podium in the elite men's road race on the final day of the African Road Cycling Championships in Wartburg, KwaZulu-Natal.

“We rode really well as a team today,” Meintjes said.

“Conditions were a little cloudy but they were great for riding and we wanted to go out and ride aggressively and try and split up the bunch and get someone alone at the front of the race.

“We managed that with Jacques (Janse van Rensburg) making the first move, and then with my counter, so it all went according to plan today.”

Compatriot Jay Thomson was second, a little more than two seconds behind Meintjes in a bunch sprint, and Jacques Janse van Rensburg took third place.

In the men’s Under-23 road race, Jayde Julius capped off the continental spectacle for the SA team with another victory, edging Eritrean Merhawi Kudus in a tight battle.

“I am just super stoked with the way I raced today, but not only my race, how the team raced,” Julius said.

“We used the numbers to really good effect, which was great for us.”
