Wonderboompoort CPF Sector 2 chairperson Pierre Bezuidenhout said an alert was received at about 10am that three men were trying to steal a car at Mayville Mall, Rekord Moot reported.

“We surprised them when we arrived, and they drove off in a white Honda. We chased after the men, and they hit a Volkswagen Beetle before crashing into a tree in Van Rensburg Street,” he added.

He said two of the suspects were arrested, while the third one fled.

Bezuidenhout said a spanner and a set of Toyota keys were found inside the car. The getaway Honda was a stolen car.

“I think that car was stolen five days ago. The men were detained by police,” he added.

Police spokesperson Sergeant Ann Poortman said the men, aged 24 and 32, were charged with attempted vehicle theft.

In a separate incident, three suspected hijackers were arrested after they crashed into a tree in Rosebank, Johannesburg, in March.

Rosebank police spokesperson Sergeant Bongi Mdletshe said the suspects, aged between 29 and 38, refused to stop and drove through the red traffic light at the intersection of Tyrwhitt and Sturdee avenues. The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree. The suspects then tried to flee, but police caught them.
