Andy Birkett will line up with a new partner next year, organisers have confirmed, when he targets a seventh career victory at the FNB Dusi Canoe Marathon.

Birkett paired up with Sbonelo Khwela to win the 2014 K2 race, and he went on to add the K1 crown in record time this year.

“Defending champions Andy Birkett (Euro Steel) and Sbonelo Khwela (Euro Steel/Red Bull) will not look to retain their title as partners, but each will compete for the overall race spoils with a new partner,” the Dusi committee said at the launch of the 2016 race on Tuesday.

The 65th edition of the 120km three-day event, a championship race in the K2 class, starts on February 18.

All paddlers over the age of 15 who are registered with an affiliated club, and are river rated in line with national safety regulations, can enter the prestigious annual race between Pietermaritzburg and Durban.
